He is also coeditor of &ltI>Popular Communication: The International Journal of Media and Culture&lt/I>.&ltBR> Michael Real is Professor of Communication and Culture at Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. His books include &ltI>Exploring Media Culture&lt/I> (1996), &ltI>Super Media&lt/I> (1989), and &ltI>Mass-Mediated Culture&lt/I> (1977). He has written scores of scholarly and general publications, directed local and international research projects, and hosted television and radio programs. The focus of his work is media, culture, and social responsibility.&ltBR> Alina Bernstein is Senior Lecturer at the School of media studies, College of management academic studies (COMAS), Israel. Her main area of research, in which she has published several articles, is media and sport, including the coedited book (with Neil Blain) &ltI>Sport, Media, Culture: Global and Local Dimensions&lt/I> (2002). She also wrote the -Representation, Identity and the Media- section in &ltI>The Media Book&lt/I> (2002). She heads the Media and Sport section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR)."

Contributor Bio:  Sandvoss, Cornel Cornel Sandvoss is Subject Leader in Media, Communication and Cultural Studies at the University of Surrey and author of "Fans: The Mirror of Consumption". Contributor Bio:  Real, Michael Michael Real is a professor at Royal Roads University in Canada. Previously, he was Director of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and prior to that Director of the innovative School of Communication at San Diego State University, where he taught for twenty years. His books include Exploring Media Culture, Super Media, The Olympics as Global Ritual, and Mass-Mediated Culture. He is the editor for UNESCO. His writings on journalism, media events, sports, popular culture, and communication theory have appeared in dozens of scholarly and general publications (Studies in Mass Communication, American Quarterly, Journal of Communications, Media Development, Journalism Quarterly, Journal of Popular culture, TV Quarterly, Quest). He holds a Ph. D. from the University of Illinois and served for nine years on the faculty of the University of California at San Diego. He has directed a variety of local, national, and international research and journalism projects, as well as hosted television and radio programs and teleconferences. The focus of his work is media, culture, and social responsibility. He is a member of the ICA, the IAMCR, and other professional organizations.
